Fullness is not a single signal

The sense of having eaten enough is assembled from stretch receptors in the stomach, from hormones released as food moves through the gut, and from the simple act of chewing. These arrive on different timescales, with the mechanical signals appearing quickly and the chemical ones building over a period long enough for a fast meal to outrun them. This is why eating quickly can leave someone feeling fine at the table and uncomfortably full a while afterwards, without any change in what was eaten.

It also explains why the same quantity of the same food feels different depending on how it was prepared, since texture alters both chewing time and stomach emptying. None of this is a rule about how anyone should eat, it is simply a description of a system with several inputs running at different speeds.

What fibre actually does

Fibre is a broad category covering several kinds of plant material that resist digestion in the small intestine, and the different kinds behave quite differently. Some add bulk and speed transit, while others form gels that slow stomach emptying and change how quickly other components are absorbed downstream. A large share of fibre reaches the large intestine intact, where resident bacteria break it down and produce compounds that appear to matter for the gut lining.

That last area is genuinely active research, and confident claims about specific fibres producing specific health outcomes are running ahead of what has been established. What is less contested is that fibre-rich foods change the texture and volume of a meal, which affects how eating feels rather than only what it contains.

Why yesterday affects today

Appetite is regulated partly by signals reflecting recent intake, so a day of unusually low or unusually high eating shifts the following day noticeably. Short sleep also alters appetite signalling, and the effect tends to push towards eating more and towards preferring foods that are quick and highly palatable. Stress operates through a separate route again, increasing intake in some people and suppressing it in others, which is why general advice about stress and eating fits so badly.

The combination means the same meal can feel generous on one day and insufficient on another for reasons that have nothing to do with the meal itself. Reading that variation as a personal failing is both inaccurate and unhelpful, since the variation is a property of the system rather than of the person.

Protein, fat and the pace of a meal

Meals containing more protein tend to sustain fullness longer, an effect observed consistently enough to be reasonably well accepted even though the mechanism is not fully resolved. Fat slows stomach emptying while contributing less to immediate fullness than its energy content might suggest, which is one reason rich foods are easy to eat quickly. The pace of a meal interacts with all of this, since a slower meal gives the delayed signals time to arrive before the plate is finished.

Company, distraction and the size of the container all change that pace without anyone deciding to change it, which is a well-documented and slightly uncomfortable finding. These are observations about how eating works rather than instructions, and they apply differently to different people and different meals.

Where this stops being a general question

Persistent digestive symptoms, unexplained changes in appetite or discomfort after eating are matters for medical assessment rather than for adjustments to fibre. Several common conditions affect how food is tolerated, and identifying them requires a clinician rather than an elimination experiment run without support. Anyone whose relationship with eating has become distressing, restrictive or preoccupying deserves specialist help, and that is a separate and important category.

General writing about appetite cannot distinguish between these situations, which is why it should not be treated as guidance for any of them. Understanding the mechanisms is useful mainly for making ordinary variation less alarming, not for diagnosing anything.
