Why There Is No Single Daily Water Number
Water requirements vary with body size, climate, activity and diet, and the widely repeated fixed daily figures trace back to guidance that was never intended to mean drinking water alone.

Fixed daily water targets circulate widely and are stated with more confidence than the underlying science supports. The variation between people and between days is large enough to make any single figure misleading.
Requirements scale with several independent variables
Water is lost through urine, through the skin, through breathing and through the digestive tract. Each of these varies with different factors, and they do not vary together.
Body size determines the baseline, since a larger body has more tissue to maintain and a greater surface from which water evaporates.
Climate, activity and the composition of the diet all add further variation, so the total requirement for one person can differ substantially between two consecutive days.
Food supplies a substantial share
Many foods are largely water by weight. Fruit, vegetables, soups, and cooked grains and pulses all contribute meaningfully to daily intake.
Metabolism produces a smaller additional quantity, since oxidising the components of food yields water as a product.
Total water recommendations issued by public health bodies generally refer to intake from all sources, which is why they are higher than the amount anyone is expected to drink.
The familiar figures have a weak origin
The best-known daily volumes appear to derive from older guidance that specified a total intake while noting that much of it comes from food, a qualification that dropped away in repetition.
Reviews looking for evidence supporting a specific fixed volume for healthy adults have generally not found it.
Current guidance from most bodies gives ranges rather than points, and states explicitly that individual needs vary.
Regulation operates continuously
The kidneys adjust urine concentration across a wide range, conserving water when intake is low and excreting the excess when it is high.
Hormonal signalling adjusts this within minutes, which means intake does not have to be matched precisely to loss for balance to be maintained.
The system is designed to handle irregular intake, which is why a fixed schedule is not required for the regulation itself to work.
Where fixed targets are actually used
Specified intakes do exist for particular medical situations, including certain kidney conditions, and in those cases the figure comes from the clinical circumstances.
Some conditions require restriction rather than increase, which is the clearest illustration of why a universal target cannot be correct.
Anyone with a condition affecting fluid balance should follow the figure their clinician gives rather than general guidance of any kind.
