Why Exercise Intensity Is Defined By Effort Not Speed

Intensity is expressed relative to an individual's capacity because the same pace demands very different physiological effort from different people and from the same person over time.

Activity guidance describes intensity in terms such as moderate and vigorous rather than in speeds or distances. The relative framing exists because absolute measures do not mean the same thing across people.

The same pace is not the same demand

A given walking or running speed requires a fixed amount of external work, but the physiological cost of producing that work varies enormously with fitness, age, body size and health.

For one person a particular pace may sit comfortably below their capacity; for another it may be close to their maximum. Describing intensity by pace would classify these identically.

Relative definitions solve this by expressing effort as a proportion of what the individual can do, which is the quantity that determines the physiological response.

How relative intensity is anchored

Laboratory definitions use proportions of maximum oxygen uptake or maximum heart rate, both of which require testing to establish accurately.

Field definitions use proxies. Perceived exertion scales ask people to rate effort, and these ratings track physiological measures reasonably well across a range of activities.

The talk test is a further simplification: moderate intensity permits conversation but not singing, while vigorous intensity makes more than a few words difficult.

Metabolic equivalents are a different tool

Activities are also catalogued by metabolic equivalents, which express energy cost as a multiple of resting metabolism for a typical adult.

These are absolute values and are useful for population surveys and for comparing activities, but they describe an average person rather than any particular one.

Using them to prescribe individual intensity reintroduces the problem that relative definitions were designed to avoid.

Why heart rate estimates are imprecise

Maximum heart rate is commonly estimated from age using simple formulas, and the variation between individuals of the same age is substantial.

Target zones derived from those estimates inherit the error, which can place a zone boundary well away from where it would sit if measured directly.

What relative framing implies over time

As capacity changes, the pace corresponding to a given intensity changes with it. Work that once counted as vigorous becomes moderate without any change in the activity.

This is why intensity has to be reassessed rather than fixed, and why progression is usually described in relative rather than absolute terms.

Anyone with a cardiac condition or significant health concerns should have intensity guidance set by a clinician, since the relative framing assumes a normal physiological response.
