How Sitting Time Is Measured Separately From Exercise
Sedentary behaviour is defined by posture and low energy expenditure while awake, making it a distinct measure that a daily exercise session does not offset.

Research increasingly treats time spent sitting as a variable in its own right rather than as the absence of exercise. The separation follows from how the two are defined and measured.
Sedentary behaviour has a technical definition
The term refers to waking behaviour in a sitting, reclining or lying posture with energy expenditure at or near resting level. Posture is part of the definition, not an incidental detail.
This distinguishes it from standing still, which is also low in energy expenditure but involves postural muscle activity and is classified separately.
It also distinguishes it from sleep, which is low in expenditure but is not waking behaviour and has entirely different physiology.
The measures are independent
A person can meet activity recommendations through a single daily session and still spend the great majority of remaining waking hours seated.
Because the two are measured over different portions of the day, they can vary independently, and studies find only weak correlation between them in many populations.
This independence is the reason both appear in current guidance rather than one being treated as the inverse of the other.
Uninterrupted duration is tracked as well as total
Sedentary time is characterised by both accumulated total and by how it is distributed, since long unbroken periods differ from the same total broken into shorter blocks.
Devices worn on the thigh can detect posture directly and are used to distinguish sitting from standing, which wrist-worn devices cannot reliably do.
Bout length is reported separately because the pattern, rather than the sum, is what several proposed mechanisms concern.
Proposed mechanisms concern local activity
One line of explanation focuses on the near-absence of contraction in large postural and leg muscles during prolonged sitting, which affects local metabolic processes.
Another concerns circulation, since sustained immobility in a seated posture affects blood flow in the lower limbs in ways that brief movement interrupts.
Neither mechanism is fully established, and much of the evidence linking sitting time to health outcomes comes from observational data where separating the effect from related factors is difficult.
Why the distinction changes advice
If sitting were simply the absence of exercise, adding a session would resolve it. Treated as a separate exposure, it calls for a separate response distributed through the day.
This is why recommendations now address breaking up prolonged sitting alongside meeting activity targets, rather than folding both into a single number.
It also changes what a workplace or a device can usefully track, since a daily step total says nothing about how the remaining sixteen waking hours were spent.
